Materials Needed:
- Random-orbit sander with 80-grit, 100-grit, and 120-grit sandpaper
- Small, razor-sharp scrapers for intricate moldings
- 100-grit sandpaper (folded in thirds)
- Sanding sponge for hard-to-reach corners
- Penetrating stain (color of your choice)
- Exterior spar varnish or polyurethane
- Paintbrushes
- Sawhorses
- Vacuum cleaner
- Dust mask and safety goggles
Method:
- Remove Door Hardware:
- Take off the door hardware (knobs, hinges, etc.) to work on a clean surface.
- Set the door on padded sawhorses.
- Sand the Flats:
- Use a random-orbit sander with 80-grit paper to remove old varnish and sun-baked flakes of wood.
- Sand the wood again with 100-grit paper, then 120-grit. Avoid going any finer to keep the wood pores open for better finish adherence.
- Scrape the Moldings:
- Small, razor-sharp scrapers are perfect for reaching corners, narrow profiles, and raised panel end grain.
- Pull the scraper with the grain, using gentle downward pressure to avoid accidental slips.
- Use two blade shapes: a trapezoid for flats and a teardrop for narrow crevices.
- Hand-Sand Profiles:
- Fold a half sheet of 100-grit sandpaper and press it into the profile with your fingertips.
- Rub back and forth in long strokes over the length of the molding.
- For inside corners, use a sanding sponge.
- Brush away dust and vacuum thoroughly.
- Apply Stain:
- Apply one to two coats of penetrating stain, wiping off any excess.
- Choose a stain color that complements your home’s aesthetic.
- Brush on Spar Varnish or Polyurethane:
- Spar varnish or polyurethane provides excellent protection against the elements.
- Apply several coats, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying times and sanding between coats.
- Reattach Hardware and Rehang the Door:
- Once the finish is dry, reattach the door hardware.
- Hang the door back in place.
Tips:
- Patience is Key: Take your time during sanding and scraping to achieve a smooth surface.
- Protect Yourself: Wear a dust mask and safety goggles while working.
- Choose Quality Products: Invest in high-performance varnish or polyurethane for lasting results.
Remember, refinishing a wood entry door is a labor of love, but the end result is worth it. Your door will regain its beauty and protect your home for years to come!
